How is amebiasis diagnosed?

Your doctor or healthcare professional can perform laboratory tests to diagnose your infection and prescribe the treatment you need.

Amebiasis is diagnosed by detecting the E. histolytica organism in feces. You will be asked you to provide a stool sample that can be tested for the presence of parasites. You will probably need to provide samples from several days, because — even if you have the infection — you may not pass E. histolytica organisms in every bowel movement.1
